Trophy Ride

Tony and A.J. took the back deck ride around the Speedway more than once

Many know that Tony Hulman rode with A.J. Foyt on the back of the pace car after A.J. became the first driver to win four Indianapolis 500s in 1977. It was the only time Hulman rode alongside the winner for the victory lap (and how it came to be is a story in itself). But it wasn’t actually the first time it happened. The pair rode around the track together in 1965 along with the BorgWarner Trophy during opening day ceremonies.
